Frank Ocean Covers Radiohead – “Fake Plastic Trees”

DDR’s Album of the Year recipient Frank Ocean is having one hell of a year.  After releasing his amazing Channel Orange, writing an open letter to take on the music community with is bi-sexuality, and a knock out performance on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, Ocean took in the Annual Spotify Conference in New York this past week and performed a cover of the great Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees”.  Can this guy do any wrong?  Check it out below:

New Music: Atoms for Peace – “Default”

Today we get a new track from the super supergroup Atoms for Peace.  Consisting of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea, Radiohead’s producer Nigel Goodrich, and Former Beck and R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker, Atoms for Peace toured the US back in 2010 to play Yorke’s The Eraser album live, which was special to say the least.  Now they are back with the track “Default”.  Cool groove and very Eraser-esque.  Check it out below.  The group is said to be releasing their first album later this year.  Fingers Crossed.

Radiohead Played Comcast Center – Mansfield, MA – 5.29.12 (Pictures, Set list, Videos)

The background changes. The impending thunderstorms. The erratic dancing. All were in play for the opening of the summer concert season at Comcast Center (aka Great Woods). I never go to Great Woods anymore, as the 2-hour wait to leave the parking lot after the show is about as enticing as a kick in the eyeball. Actually, scratch that, it is 3 hours. But there is only one band (now that R.E.M. Is gone) that will get me to endure the wrath that is Great Woods. And that is the mighty Radiohead. I could explain the songs, tell you how good they are, blah blah blah. But you already know all that. You know about “Creep” (which they never play live, thank God). You know about the worldwide success of OK Computer, which still stands up today. You know about the best album of the 2000’s, Kid A. You know about the forward thinking of 2007’s In Rainbows, in which Radiohead said ‘Go ahead, pay what you want for this’. You might not know about last year’s amazing The King of Limbs, but that’s ok. Just know that when you go to a Radiohead concert, you are hearing the best band of our era in their prime.

Set List:

The Daily Mail
The Gloaming
Pyramid Song
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
Morning Mr Magpie

DDR’s Top 20 Albums of 2011 – #7

#7 – Radiohead – The King of Limbs

(March 29th – Independently Released/TBD Records in USA)

Radiohead’s worst album, Pablo Honey, is still 99% better than what the major labels are crapping out these days.  So anytime there is a new Radiohead release, a surprise or otherwise, it is usually an event.  The King of Limbs came up on us quick this year.  Independently released (and similar to 2008’s In Rainbows), it continues on the path of Radiohead releases that challenge the listener and have huge rewards on the other end.  The King of Limbs is all about groove and it is what carries these songs.  You could say it is drummer Phil Selway’s finest moment.  But as past records indicate, The King of Limbs falls on Thom Yorke’s vocals/sounds.  Opener “Bloom” sets the tone and the only single on the album, “Lotus Flower,” is the catchiest of the bunch.  The album solidifies itself at the end as one of Radiohead’s best, with “Codex,” “Give Up the Ghost” and “Separator.”  The latter’s last words being “If you think this is over, then you’re wrong.”   This gives us hope for what lies ahead in Radiohead’s future.
